After almost six months in office, he resigned from this office on May 23, 1995 and instead became Minister of State with the Finance Minister the following day. He held this office until the end of Bruton's tenure on June 26, 1997. In the by-election made necessary by his death, his son Simon Coveney was elected to the House of Commons.
