Gerald Bartley
Gerald Bartley ( Irish Gearóid Mac Pharthaláin , born June 12, 1898 , † May 10, 1974 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil .
biography
After attending school, Bartley worked as an insurance broker and also completed a law degree . He then worked as a lawyer ( barrister ).
Bartley began his political career in 1932 as a candidate for Fianna Fáil when he was first elected to the House of Commons ( Dáil Éireann ). In this he represented ten re-elections until 1937, first the constituency of Galway and then until 1965 the constituency of Galway West .
From June 1951 to June 1954 he was during the tenure of Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Éamon de Valera Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture. After the Fianna Fáil won the general election again in 1957, Prime Minister de Valera appointed him Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and Trade in March 1957 and then from February 1958 to July 1959 Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance.
After Prime Minister Seán Lemass took office , he was appointed to the cabinet for the first time on July 23, 1959, as Minister for the Irish-speaking Areas ( Gaeltacht ). After a government reshuffle , he was then Defense Minister in the Lemass cabinet from October 11, 1961 to April 21, 1965 . During this time, the future Minister and President of the Dáil Éireann Joseph Brennan was his assigned Parliamentary Secretary.
In the general election of 1965 Bartley declined to run again.
