Simon de Melun

Simon de Melun († July 11, 1302 at Courtrai ) was a Marshal of France from the House of Melun . He was a younger son of Vice Count Adam II of Melun and Constance of Sancerre. From his mother he inherited the castles of La Loupe and Marcheville.

With four other knights in his suite, Simon took King Louis IX's crusade to Africa (1270) . part. Under King Philip III. he served as Seneschal of Périgord , Quercy , Limousin and Carcassonne . In the crusade against Aragón in 1282, Simon took part as Grand Master of the crossbowmen ( maître des arbalétriers ). He was appointed marshal ( maréchal ) by King Philip IV around 1290 . Together with the rest of the military leadership of France, Simon fell on July 11, 1302 in the battle of the Spurs against the Flemings.
