Thomas F. O'Higgins Sr.

Thomas Francis O'Higgins, Sr. (* 1890 ; † November 1, 1953 in Dublin ) was an Irish doctor and politician of the Cumann na nGaedheal and most recently the Fine Gael , who was a member of the House of Commons from 1929 until his death in 1953 ( Dáil Éireann ) was. He was Minister of Defense between 1948 and 1951 and Minister of Industry and Trade for a short period in 1951.

Life

Doctor and MP

O'Higgins was born in 1892 to Thomas Francis Higgins († 1923) and Anne Sullivan († 1953), the daughter of Timothy Daniel Sullivan . After studying medicine , he worked as a doctor. His younger brother Kevin O'Higgins was also a member of the Dáil Éireann, Foreign Minister and Justice of Ireland and was shot on July 10, 1927 in Booterstown by three IRA members, Timothy Coughlin, Bill Gannon and Archie Doyle. One of his uncles was Timothy Michael Healy , who was Governor General of the Irish Free State from 1922 to 1927 .

He himself was elected as a candidate for Cumann na nGaedheal in a by-election on March 14, 1929 for the first time as a member of the Dáil Éireann ( Teachta Dála ). First he represented after his re-election in the elections on February 16, 1932 , January 24, 1933 , July 1, 1937 , June 17, 1938 , June 23, 1943 and May 30, 1944 the constituency of Leix-Offaly , where he from September 3, 1933 of the Fine Gael, which emerged from the merger of Cumann na nGaedheal, National Center Party and Army Comrades Association (ACA). He was previously chairman of the Army Comrades Association from August 1932.

On February 18, 1948 O'Higgins was appointed by Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) John A. Costello as Minister of Defense in his cabinet and held this office until his replacement by Seán Mac Eoin as part of a cabinet reshuffle on March 7, 1951. He himself took over this government reshuffle on March 7, 1951 by Daniel Morrissey the office of Secretary of Commerce and Industry, which he held until the end of Costello's tenure on June 13, 1951.

His son Thomas F. O'Higgins was also a member of the Dáil Éireann, Minister of Health and Chief Justice of Ireland and also a judge at the European Court of Justice . Another son was the politician Michael O'Higgins , who was both a member of the Dáil Éireann (1948 to 1951, 1954 to 1969) and the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) (1951 to 1954, 1969 to 1977) and from 1973 to 1977 as Leader of the majority faction held the position of Leader of the Seanad . Michael O'Higgins was married to Brigid Hogan-O'Higgins , who was also a member of the Dáil Éireann between 1957 and 1977.
