Timothy Daniel Sullivan (born May 29, 1827 in Bantry , † March 31, 1914 ) was an Irish politician , journalist and author .

Life

Politician

Sullivan was elected to the House of Commons for the Westmeath constituency in the 1880 general election to the British House of Commons . He represented the constituency until 1885, after which he represented the newly established constituency of Dublin College Green . In the election to the House of Commons in 1892 he lost the constituency to Joseph E. Kenny , but was able to move into the House of Commons without a candidate for the constituency of West Donegal . He remained a member of that constituency until his retirement in 1900.

In addition to his work as a member of Parliament Sullivan held from January 1, 1886 to December 31, 1887 for a total of two consecutive terms in the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin . On January 1, 1888, he was replaced by Thomas Sexton .

Party affiliation

Sullivan was a member of the Home Rule League , for which he moved into the House of Commons in 1880, which was absorbed into the Irish Parliamentary Party in 1882 . After a dispute within the Irish Parliamentary Party over its chairman Charles Stewart Parnell , Sullivan moved to the secessionist Irish National Federation . In 1900 both parties reunited to form the Irish Parliamentary Party.

Author and journalist

Sullivan was editor of the Irish national magazine The Nation . Based on an article on the Irish National League , he was sentenced to prison in December 1887 for violating the Protection of Person and Property Act 1881 .

He wrote the song God Save Ireland , which had the character of a national anthem at the time of the Irish Republic from 1919 to 1922 and the Irish Free State between 1922 and 1926 .
