Maximilian Günther (born July 2, 1997 in Oberstdorf ) is a German - Austrian racing driver . He has been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship since the 2018/19 season . For the 2019/20 season he was accepted into the BMW works driver squad and starts for BMW i Andretti Motorsport.

Career

Günther began his motorsport career in 2006 in kart racing , in which he remained active until 2010. Among other things, he won the ADAC KF3 kart championship in 2010. In 2011 he made his debut in formula racing and took part in the Formula BMW Talent Cup organized by BMW . He won two races and took second place in this training competition.

At the beginning of 2012 Günther received a contract with Mücke Motorsport . He completed preparatory training that year and did not compete in any racing series. In 2013 Günther entered professional formula racing. He was given a cockpit in the ADAC Formula Masters with the ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg eV team, which was supervised by Mücke Motorsport . After finishing several races on the podium, he won his first race at the Lausitzring . He started from pole position and drove the fastest race lap. He scored another victory on this race weekend. Günther finished the season with two wins and a total of eleven podium finishes in second place. With 240 to 388 points he lost to his teammate Alessio Picariello . In 2014 Günther stayed with Mücke Motorsport in the ADAC Formula Masters. He won four races and finished second overall with ten podium finishes. With 262 to 377 points he was defeated by Mikkel Jensen . Günther set two records in the ADAC Formula Masters, which was discontinued at the end of 2014, with 21 podium finishes and 14 pole positions.

In 2015 Günther received a cockpit in the European Formula 3 championship at Mücke Motorsport . At the Grand Prix de Pau he achieved his first podium finish with a second place. His first victory followed in Nuremberg . Günther canceled his contract with Mücke Motorsport two events before the end of the season and temporarily withdrew from the championship. He contested the last race weekend for the Prema championship team . Günther finished eighth in the drivers' standings as the best Mücke driver.

In 2016 Günther completed his second season in the European Formula 3 championship for the Prema Powerteam. He won four races and was on the podium a total of 13 times. With 322 to 507 points he was defeated by his team-mate Lance Stroll and finished second overall.

In 2017 Günther competed again with the Prema Powerteam in the European Formula 3. During the year he won five races, in the championship he finished third with 383 points. In addition, he became a test and reserve driver for the Mercedes teams in the DTM and was allowed to drive in the simulator of the Mercedes AMG F1 Team .

In 2018 he switched to the FIA Formula 2 Championship , in which he competed for BWT Arden . Here he won his first Formula 2 race as part of the Great Britain Grand Prix . In the overall standings, he finished 14th. He also became a test and development driver for Dragon Racing in the FIA Formula E Championship .

In 2018/19 he became a regular driver in the FIA ​​Formula E Championship at Dragon Racing. In three races he was replaced by Felipe Nasr . With 20 points he finished 17th in the drivers' championship at the end of the season. In 2019/20 he will compete for BMW i Andretti Motorsport and will be promoted to BMW works driver. Günther achieved his first victory in the third race in Santiago de Chile. At 22 years and 200 days, he is currently the youngest race winner in the history of Formula E.

Günther has both German and Austrian citizenship. He competes in racing with a German license.

Günther has been supported by the ADAC Sports Foundation since the end of 2011. In 2014 Günther was also a member of the Deutsche Post Speed ​​Academy sponsorship team and won the overall ranking. In 2016, he once again secured overall victory in the Deutsche Post Speed ​​Academy. In October 2016, a jury made up of media and ADAC representatives selected Günther as ADAC Junior Motor Sportsman of the Year 2016 .
