Lance Stroll (born October 29, 1998 in Montreal , Québec , actually Lance Strulovitch ) is a Canadian racing driver . He won the Italian Formula 4 championship in 2014 , the Toyota Racing Series in 2015 and the European Formula 3 championship in 2016 . He has been competing in the Formula 1 World Championship since 2017 . He also has Belgian citizenship through his mother .

Career

Karting (2008-2013)

Stroll began his motorsport career in karting in 2008 , in which he remained active until 2013. In 2008 and 2009 he won several Canadian Junior Series championships. In 2010 he won the Rotax Mini Max on the Florida Winter Tour . In 2010, at the age of eleven, Stroll was accepted into the Ferrari Driver Academy , the Scuderia Ferrari support program. In 2011 he competed in Europe for the first time and was ninth in the KF3 class of the WSK Euro Series . In 2012, Stroll won the SKUSA SuperNationals . He was also fourth in the KF3 class of the WSK Master Series and tenth in the CIK-FIA World Cup of the KF3. In 2013, Stroll competed in the CIK-FIA World and European Championships in the KF category. He reached sixth place in the world championship.

Beginnings in formula racing (2014-2016)

In 2014, Stroll switched to formula racing and initially received a cockpit in the Florida Winter Series . A second place at Homestead-Miami Speedway was his best result. Stroll then competed for the Prema Power Team in the 2014 Italian Formula 4 championship . His father acquired shares in Prema as part of his commitment. In the championship he managed to win his debut race. Stroll won ten races in the championship class and won the championship. At the last race weekend he did not start due to an injury. At the beginning of 2015 Stroll started for M2 Competition in the Toyota Racing Series . He scored three victories in the first two events. He scored his fourth victory in the last race, the New Zealand Grand Prix . This made him the youngest driver to win an international automobile Grand Prix at the age of 16. Stroll won the championship with 906 to 798 against his teammate Brandon Maïsano .

In 2015 Stroll then competed for the Prema Powerteam in the European Formula 3 championship . At the eighth race weekend in Spielberg , he achieved his first podium finish with a third place. In the next races he achieved three more third places and one second place. After all, he won a race at the last event in Hockenheim . While his teammate Felix Rosenqvist won the championship, Stroll finished the season in fifth place overall. At the end of the year, Stroll left the Ferrari funding program. He switched to the support program of Williams and was there for the next season Formula 1 test driver. Stroll together with left Luca Baldisserri , the former head of the support program, Ferrari to continue to act as a mentor to stroll.

In 2016 Stroll drove again for the Prema Powerteam in the European Formula 3 championship. He won one race each in Le Castellet , Zandvoort and Spa-Francorchamps ; two races each in Spielberg, Nuremberg , Nürburg and Imola as well as all three races at the last race weekend in Hockenheim. With a total of 14 wins from 30 races, he won the championship. At the end of the season he was 507 to 322 points well ahead of his teammate Maximilian Günther , who was second overall. In addition, debuted stroll in the GT Trek and took the Ford -Werksteam Chip Ganassi Racing at the 24 Hours of Daytona , which the MSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship mattered part. He finished fifth overall with his teammates Brendon Hartley , Andy Priaulx and Alexander Wurz .

Formula 1 (since 2017)

In the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship , Stroll competed for Williams as a regular driver. Stroll is considered the best-prepared debutant in Formula 1 history. His entry into Formula 1 had been promoted for years by a program funded by his father, which cost a double-digit million amount and which included taking over the Prema Powerteam. In the second half of 2016, Stroll completed several test drives in camera with a two-year-old Williams FW36 and corresponding Mercedes engines that were specially built for him. In addition, Stroll had access to the latest simulator sponsored by his father, even before Williams factory drivers Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa . By the start of the 2017 season, he should have completed around 8,000 km of test drives in Formula 1 vehicles in this way. He chose number 18 as his permanent starting number. In his debut race in Australia he was eliminated. In his home race, the Canadian Grand Prix , he scored points for the first time in ninth place. A race later in Azerbaijan he achieved his first podium finish with third place. At the end of the season, he finished twelfth overall with 40 points, in 2018 Stroll stayed with Williams and achieved 18th place in the championship with six points.

For the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship , Stroll switched to Racing Point . His father is involved as the owner of the racing stable. He finished the season in 15th place overall with 21 points. He will also drive for Racing Point in 2020 . After the seventh race, he is currently seventh in the drivers' standings with 42 points.
