backgrounds

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and with 38 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 22 points and Red Bull Racing with 71 points .

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), P Zero Hypersoft (pink), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There have been some changes to the route compared to last year. The walls at the exit of the Virage Senna and between curve three and the Pont de la Concorde have been renewed, and new safety fences have been erected. The route boundary on the exit of turn three has also been redesigned so that the run-off area has been enlarged, and it is now easier for the sports attendant to recover vehicles. In the run-out zone of the Pits Hairpin , the boundary of the route has also been redesigned in order to be able to better protect rescue vehicles, and the boundary in turn 14 has also been redesigned. In addition, the tire stacks in the corners Virage Senna , corner four , Pont de la Concorde , Pits Hairpin and in the finish chicane were replaced by TecPro barriers.

There was an additional, third DRS zone compared to the previous year . The measuring point was 15 meters behind curve five , the system can then be activated 95 meters after curve seven . The other two DRS zones remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The second zone began after the Pits Hairpin , exactly 55 meters before the next full throttle curve. The third zone was on the start-finish straight and began 70 meters after the last corner. There was only one measuring point for these two DRS zones, so that in the event of a successful overtaking maneuver in the first zone, the driver ahead could use the DRS again in the second zone.

In this race, Toro Rosso used a further developed version of the Honda RA618H for the first time , Honda had increased the power of the internal combustion engine. Also earned Renault a more advanced version of the Renault RE18 used was provided to all four drivers with Renault drives available. In addition, Vettel competed in Canada with a new specification of the Ferrari 062 EVO .

Marcus Ericsson , Kevin Magnussen (seven each), Romain Grosjean , Max Verstappen (five), Brendon Hartley (four), Kimi Räikkönen , Sergio Pérez , Stoffel Vandoorne , Vettel (three each), Pierre Gasly , Nico Hülkenberg , Ricciardo, Carlos Sainz jr. , Sergei Sirotkin (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (six times), Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso , Vettel and Ricciardo (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Paul Cooke (CAN), Gerd Ennser (DEU) and Emanuele Pirro (ITA).

free training

In the first free practice, Verstappen set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 13.302 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Ricciardo. The training was interrupted after Hulkenberg rolled out on the side of the track with a gearbox damage.

In the second free practice session, too, Verstappen was fastest in 1: 12.198 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Ricciardo. Training was interrupted by Sainz after an accident.

In the third free practice session, Verstappen was again fastest. He set the fastest time in 1: 11.599 minutes, ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Vettel was fastest. Grosjean suffered engine damage while exiting the pits and did not qualify for the Grand Prix. He was still allowed to take part in the race because he was fast enough in the free practice sessions. Besides him, Ericsson, the Williams drivers and Gasly were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. The Ferrari and Mercedes drivers drove their fastest lap on the Ultrasoft compound, all others on Hypersoft . Ricciardo was fastest. The McLaren drivers, Charles Leclerc , Hartley and Magnussen were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 10.764 minutes, Vettel set the best time ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. It was the 54th pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fastest lap time ever on this track.

Gasly was moved to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fourth internal combustion engine, fourth turbocharger , fourth MGU-H and third MGU-K .

run

Vettel stayed in front at the start. Verstappen attacked Bottas, but couldn't get past. Ricciardo passed Raikkonen. Ocon overtook Hulkenberg on the outside of Turn 6. Stroll oversteered while driving through Turn 6 and slipped into Brendon Hartley and both hit the wall. The race was over for both of them and the safety car had to be on the track. Vettel led in front of Bottas, Verstappen, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Ocon, Hülkenberg, Sainz and Perez.

At the restart on lap 4 there were no changes in position. In turn 2, Perez touched Sainz, slipped off the track and lost several positions. Alonso attacked Leclerc on lap 9, but couldn't get past.

Hamilton complained of performance dropouts in the following rounds. On lap 17, Verstappen pitted and switched from Hypersoft to Supersoft . Hamilton also came in and switched from Ultrasoft to Supersoft . Both came back in front of Leclerc in fifth and sixth. Ricciardo came in one lap later and also switched from Hypersoft to Supersoft . He came back on track in fifth place ahead of Hamilton.

Raikkonen came into the pits on lap 33 and also switched to Supersoft and came back on the track just behind Hamilton. Then he drove the fastest lap. Bottas and Vettel also followed and all switched to Supersoft . Vettel kept the lead in front of Bottas, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Grosjean and Ocon. Vettel's lead grew to six seconds.

Alonso had to retire on lap 42 of his 300th race. Grosjean pitted on lap 49 and switched to Hypersoft . When entering the box, he was briefly pushed onto the grass by Ocon. Bottas lapped Sainz on lap 55, but slipped off the track in turn two and lost several seconds to Vettel. Verstappen then drove the fastest lap and continuously caught up with Bottas in small steps, but could no longer catch up.

Vettel won the race ahead of Bottas and Verstappen. Ricciardo, Hamilton, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg, Sainz, Ocon and Charles Leclerc occupied the remaining points .

The race was mistakenly flagged prematurely by Canadian model Winnie Harlow after receiving wrong instructions. Thus the stand was counted after the 68th instead of the 70th round. This affected Magnussen and Pérez. Pérez had overtaken Magnussen in the battle for 13th place shortly before the finish. The fastest lap went to Verstappen instead of Ricciardo. It was Vettel's 50th career victory in the Formula 1 World Championship . It was also his first win in Canada since 2013 and the first time since 2014 that neither Mercedes nor Hamilton won in Canada. Vettel took the lead in the overall standings from Hamilton, Bottas was now third. The first three positions in the constructors' championship remained unchanged.
