The 1970 Canadian Grand Prix took place on September 20 at the Mont-Tremblant Circuit and was the eleventh race of the 1970 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
At Lotus, the decision was made not to take part in the Canadian Grand Prix with the works team two weeks after Jochen Rindt's death . Thus, for the first time this season, only a single Lotus racing car was entered for a world championship race, namely the Lotus 72 driven by Graham Hill from Rob Walker's private team .
Otherwise there were no major changes in the field of drivers compared to the previous races of the season.
training
It was expected that one of Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni's Ferrari 312Bs, which had been getting stronger from race to race so far , would reach pole position. Somewhat surprisingly, however, Jackie Stewart drove the fastest training time in the new Tyrrell own-build with the designation 001 and then decided to drive the car for the first time in a race that is part of the world championship. Behind him, the favorite Ferrari started ahead of Stewart's team-mate François Cevert , who still drove a March 701 used by Team Tyrrell as a customer vehicle. After a strong training performance, John Surtees made it to fifth place on the grid in his own construction, Surtees TS7 , ahead of March factory pilot Chris Amon .
run
Stewart initially took the lead in front of Ickx and Pedro Rodríguez , who had moved up from seventh on the grid to third immediately after the start. Surtees, Cevert and Regazzoni followed in fourth, fifth and sixth. Stewart managed to get a head start, impressively demonstrating the competitiveness of the Tyrrell 001. However, on lap 32 he retired due to damage to the axle. So Ickx took the lead with around 30 seconds ahead of his team mate Regazzoni, who had been able to fight his way up a few places in the meantime. It was followed by Amon and Cevert, the latter having to make a pit stop in the final phase of the race due to damage to one of the rear shock absorbers and thereby losing some places.
The two Ferrari drivers achieved a sovereign double victory, which means that Ickx rose to second place in the world championship standings. With two races to go and 17 points behind Jochen Rindt, who was still in the lead, Ickx still had the chance to win the world championship title. The prerequisite for this, however, was victory in the two subsequent races.
Registration list
1 Jackie Stewart only drove the March 701 with start number 1 in practice and from then on used the Tyrrell 001 with start number 3.
