Reports

background

There were no changes in the list of participants compared to the Monaco Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

The two McLaren teammates Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger shared the front row in front of Alain Prost and Alessandro Nannini . Nelson Piquet and Thierry Boutsen qualified for starting positions five and six.

Since the track was damp for much of the second qualifying round on Saturday, the consistently shorter lap times on Friday determined the starting grid.

run

In wet track conditions, Berger initially took the lead with an early start, but immediately dropped back a little, hoping to avoid a penalty. At the end of the first lap he was second behind Senna and ahead of Nannini.

When the track dried up after only a few laps, Berger was the first to go to the pits to have slicks fitted. Senna followed him immediately, which meant that Nannini took the lead for a short time before he drove to the pits to have his car converted to dry tires. Shortly after returning to the track, he collided with a marmot and had to head back to the box to have the remains removed from the side box of his car.

After most of the drivers had switched to slicks, Berger was in the lead ahead of Senna, while Prost and Boutsen battled it out for third place. The Belgian was able to overtake the Frenchman on lap 20, but got into a still damp spot, turned and was eliminated due to a collision with Nicola Larini, who had to be lapped .

After a spin on lap 22, Alessandro Nannini had to park his car in the area of the hairpin at the edge of the track. A few laps later, Jean Alesi collided with the parked vehicle after making a driving error in the same place as Nannini.

Berger was the first to cross the finish line, but received a one-minute time penalty because of his early start. He was ranked fourth behind Senna, Piquet and Mansell. Alain Prost was fifth ahead of Derek Warwick .
