Reports
background
The only change within the field of drivers compared to the US East Grand Prix was the return of Geoff Lees , who stepped in at Theodore Racing as a substitute for Jan Lammers .
training
Didier Pironi qualified for pole position with the Ferrari 126C2 in front of the two Renault drivers Alain Prost and René Arnoux, who are also equipped with turbo engines . Nelson Piquet , who had failed to qualify with the Brabham - BMW the previous weekend , finished fourth ahead of Bruno Giacomelli and John Watson .
run
At the start, Pironi stalled his engine. Most of the following riders managed to avoid the unexpected obstacle. However, Raul Boesel reacted very late and lightly touched the standing Ferrari. Riccardo Paletti , whose view of the stationary vehicle had previously been blocked by Boesel, was unable to react in time and crashed into the rear of the Ferrari, which was then pushed across the track into the car of Geoff Lee, who was passing by at the same time. Pironi was uninjured and immediately came to the aid of the marshals, who, with the support of Formula 1 doctor Sid Watkins, tried to free the seriously injured Paletti from his wreck. During the rescue, which lasted around half an hour, there was a brief fire, but it was quickly extinguished. Paletti was taken to the hospital by helicopter, where he succumbed to his injuries around two hours later.
The race, which was stopped immediately after the accident at the start, was restarted around 6 p.m. local time. While Pironi was able to take part in a T-Car , Lees had to forego the restart because he had no spare car available. Jean-Pierre Jarier decided not to participate due to the death of his teammate.
While Pironi took the lead ahead of Arnoux, Prost, Piquet and Watson, Nigel Mansell collided with Bruno Giacomelli and injured himself on the first lap. Due to poor handling of the replacement Ferrari, Pironi dropped to fourth place by the third lap.
On the ninth lap, Piquet took the lead. From the 29th lap, Patrese, who started from eighth place, added a Brabham double lead. After both Renault drivers had retired, Andrea de Cesaris was in third place from Eddie Cheever on lap 31 . As these two and fifth-placed Derek Daly ran out of gas shortly before the end of the race, John Watson finally took the podium. Elio de Angelis was fourth ahead of Marc Surer and Andrea de Cesaris, who was classified sixth because of the distance he had covered.
