The 1982 Swiss Grand Prix took place on August 29th at the Stade Automobile de Dijon-Prenois near Dijon in France and was the 14th race of the 1982 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

As a result of the serious accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1955, a ban on circuit racing was issued in Switzerland , which, with the exception of electric cars, still exists today (as of 2018), there has been no Formula 1 race in since 1954 took place in Switzerland. In 1982 this ban was circumvented by staging the Swiss Grand Prix in Dijon, and thus on French territory. Already in 1975 had chosen this approach to a non-scoring for the World Cup races align, but this was no repetition.

training

Alain Prost, a Renault driver, qualified for pole position for the ninth time this season . Together with his team-mate René Arnoux , he formed the front row in front of Riccardo Patrese and Niki Lauda . Behind Andrea de Cesaris and the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet followed the two Williams pilots Derek Daly and Keke Rosberg .

run

Ferrari driver Patrick Tambay decided not to take part in the race due to health problems .

Although the Brabham drivers were considered favorites due to the team's new pit stop strategy, the Renault drivers initially dominated, with Prost taking the lead from Arnoux on the second lap. Passing Lauda and Patrese, Piquet moved up to third place by the fourth lap, followed by Rosberg.

In the eleventh lap, Piquet achieved second place, which he held until he headed for the pit on lap 40 to refuel according to the strategy that had been set in advance, which was an innovation at the time. He returned to the track in fifth. When Arnoux initially slowed down on the 74th lap and was finally eliminated, he came in fourth. Rosberg also benefited from Arnoux's failure by being able to catch up on the leading Prost from second place. In the penultimate lap he took the lead from this one.

Since the organizers forgot to wave the checkered flag at the end of the race, Rosberg drove another lap to be on the safe side before celebrating his first Grand Prix victory, which also brought him the lead in the world championship. Prost came in second ahead of Lauda, Piquet and Patrese. Elio de Angelis received the last World Cup point of the day in sixth place.
