Reports
background
In the run-up to the penultimate race of the 1982 season, the first future driver changes became known. So was René Arnoux a contract with Ferrari signed. Eddie Cheever would then replace him at Renault . However, since this change was not due until the 1983 season , Ferrari had to hire another driver at short notice to replace the injured Didier Pironi , who could help defend the team's leadership in the constructors' world championship until the end of the season. They asked Mario Andretti , who finally accepted the offer.
Toleman entered with a new car . It was the Toleman TG183 model , which was officially reported by the team and also piloted in the race by Derek Warwick . The Alfa Romeo team, on the other hand, only temporarily tested a new car equipped with a turbo engine during training.
training
The Formula 1 returnees Andretti secured pole position in the Ferrari 126C2 , to the delight of the Italian spectators . His team mate Patrick Tambay followed behind the reigning world champion Nelson Piquet and in front of his team mate Riccardo Patrese in third place on the grid. Alain Prost and René Arnoux's two Renaults formed the third row.
run
Since Andretti didn't get off to a good start, Prost tried to take the lead, but got onto the grass next to the track and fell back. As a result, Piquet briefly took the lead, but was relegated to fifth place by Arnoux, Tambay, Patrese and Andretti during the first lap. Due to a clutch defect, he fell back significantly over the course of the following laps and finally gave up the race after seven laps. Shortly before that, his team-mate Patrese, who was now in second place, had also retired due to a damaged clutch.
On the seventh lap, Prost took third place as a result of an overtaking maneuver against Andretti. On the 27th lap, however, he retired due to a defect in the injection system. There were no further changes of position within the leading group. So Arnoux won ahead of Tambay and Andretti. John Watson was fourth ahead of Michele Alboreto and Eddie Cheever.
Keke Rosberg , who was the leader in the championship standings , was able to finish the race, but did not reach the points because of a broken rear wing. Since Pironi could no longer compete due to his injuries sustained in training for the German Grand Prix , Watson was Rosberg's only remaining opponent in the fight for the drivers' world championship before the season finale in Las Vegas .
