The 1980 Italian Grand Prix took place on September 14th at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari in Imola and was the twelfth race of the 1980 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
As a result of the mass accident that occurred at the 1978 Grand Prix and in connection with which Ronnie Peterson died, some safety modifications were required at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza for the 1980 season . They were carried out in time for the 1980 race, but there was a contract with the operators of the Autodromo Dino Ferrari in Imola, who had already held a Formula 1 race that was not part of the world championship in 1979 and now wanted to stand in as a substitute organizer for the Grand Prix. So in 1980 the Italian Grand Prix did not take place in Monza for the first and only time so far .
As a replacement for the still injured Jochen Mass , Arrows hired the German Grand Prix debutant Manfred Winkelhock .
Jody Scheckter , who showed his lack of motivation throughout the season after winning the world championship last year, announced this weekend that he would be leaving motorsport for the end of the year.
training
Manfred Winkelhock collided during the first training with the Lotus 81 of Nigel Mansell . Although both drivers took part in the second qualification training on Saturday with repaired vehicles or their T-Cars , they could not qualify for the race.
Since engine performance played a more decisive role than aerodynamics on the Imola circuit, the two Renault drivers René Arnoux and Jean-Pierre Jabouille qualified as expected for the front row. Carlos Reutemann on Willams and Alfa Romeo driver Bruno Giacomelli formed the second row in front of Nelson Piquet and Alan Jones, who was the leader in the World Championship .
During the training, Gilles Villeneuve tested a turbo-powered Ferrari with the designation 126C , which however did not yet prove to be competitive.
run
At the start, Reutemann immediately took the lead, but after a few meters fell back to last place with clutch problems. The two Renault drivers Arnoux and Jabouille finished the first lap in the positions from which they started, followed by Piquet and Giacomelli.
In the third lap, Jabouille first went past his team-mate in the lead. Just one lap later, Piquet was in the lead after overtaking both Renaults.
On lap six, Villeneuve had a spectacular accident as a result of a puncture in front of the Tosa bend. The Ferrari was thrown back onto the track after being hit hard by the guard rails. Villeneuve escaped unharmed as the monocoque , unlike the rest of the car, was undamaged. Giacomelli had to give up the race with a puncture after running over debris. The section of the route in which the accident occurred was later named after Villeneuve.
After overtaking Arnoux on lap 12, Jones took over second place from his teammate Jabouille on lap 29. Since his toughest competitor in the fight for the world championship, Nelson Piquet, was unreachable in front, the second place was not enough to defend the lead in the championship table.
As both Renaults were unable to keep their points all the way to the finish due to technical problems, Carlos Reutemann took third place ahead of Elio de Angelis , Keke Rosberg and Didier Pironi .
