background
Between the Monaco Grand Prix and the World Cup in France, the Spanish Grand Prix initially took place on June 1st . Due to the increasingly professional marketing of Formula 1 under the direction of Bernie Ecclestone , there was disagreement between the FOCA, headed by him, and the world association FISA regarding the distribution of the television money and the future direction of Formula 1. Alan Jones won the race in which the FISA-related teams Ferrari , Renault and Alfa Romeo did not participate. As a world association still responsible for awarding the World Cup points, the organization subsequently withdrew its World Cup status from the race.
Just in time for the French GP that followed about a month later, a temporary compromise was reached in order to be able to organize this race properly again.
Marc Surer returned to the ATS Racing Team after a break of several weeks due to injury . Since they only wanted to use one car there, Jan Lammers had to leave the team. He then became the new regular driver at Ensign Racing , where he replaced Tiff Needell , who had temporarily jumped in after Clay Regazzoni's accident, permanently.
training
For their home race, the French Jacques Laffite , René Arnoux and Didier Pironi qualified for the first three starting positions. Behind the two Williams teammates Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann , Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Alain Prost were followed by two other Frenchmen.
The starting positions 17 and 19 for Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter made it clear again that the reigning world championship team Ferrari was in a serious crisis.
All drivers completed their fastest laps during training at average speeds of more than 200 km / h.
run
Laffite confidently led the race during the first half. Behind them, Arnoux and Pironi dueled for second place. From the fourth round, Jones also intervened in this fight and won it in the eighth round. He then gradually shortened his deficit on Laffite. Meanwhile, Arnoux fell behind Didier Pironi and Nelson Piquet .
When Laffite began to have increasing problems with his tires at the beginning of the second half, Jones quickly caught up and finally took the lead on lap 35, which he never relinquished. In the 42nd lap, Laffite also lost second place to Pironi. He finally kept third place in front of Piquet, Arnoux and Reutemann.
