The 1950 French Grand Prix took place on the Reims circuit on July 2nd and was the sixth race of the 1950 World Automobile Championship .

background

19 entries were received for the race. Ferrari did not compete with the works team, but was only represented by the privateer Peter Whitehead .

training

The training on the fast course was dominated by the factory Alfa Romeo . Fangio secured pole position from Farina and Fagioli . The best non-Alfa was almost five seconds slower than the third-placed Fagioli Alfa.

run

As already indicated in practice, the Alfa Romeo were the top favorites on the fast track. So even after the start they led the field with Farina at the front. On the 18th lap, however, he had to head for the pits to have his defective fuel pump repaired there. This took him over seven minutes. Nevertheless he managed to get back to third place by halfway through the race. Shortly afterwards, however, he was unlucky again and had to pit again, moved up to third place and finally had to park his car on the track nine laps before the end with the fuel pump finally defective. As a result, Peter Whitehead inherited third place, which would remain his only podium in his Formula 1 career. The main benefit of Farina's defect was Fangio, who won the race undisputed and also took the lead in the drivers' championship. Due to the high temperatures, the engines were subjected to enormous loads. This meant that all started Maseratis had to give up with engine failure and the Talbots had to constantly refill cooling water.
