Franco Rol (born June 5, 1908 in Turin , † June 18, 1977 in Rapallo ) was an Italian racing driver .

Career

Franco Rol was an Italian aristocrat who started out in motorsport as a gentleman driver in the 1940s. His Alfa Romeo had a special, short chassis and Rol led the 1948 Grand Prix of Sicily with it before an engine failure stopped him. In 1949 he was third in the Mille Miglia .

Rol joined Formula 1 in 1950 . He became a team-mate of Louis Chiron at Maserati . He made his debut at the Monaco Grand Prix , where he was involved in the first lap collision. The races in France and Italy also ended without a countable result for Rol.

In 1951 he moved to the OSCA team , but only contested the race in Monza , which he finished ninth.

In 1953 Franco Rol's career ended after a serious accident in a road race in Sicily . Rol survived a heavy impact in a wall with serious injuries, was able to recover completely, but did not race anymore.
