Mille Miglia 1949
The 16th Mille Miglia , also Mille Miglia, Brescia-Roma-Brescia , took place on April 23 and 24, 1949 and ran over 1,602 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.
The race
The opening of the racing event, which was primarily reserved for professional racers before the Second World War, to amateurs continued in 1949; with ultimately negative consequences for the race itself. In 1949, 301 vehicles entered the race and 602 racing drivers were driven by the obligatory teams of two. That number was almost equal to the number of Italians who held a racing license in 1949. But that meant that the group of pilots who had almost no experience in long road races got the better of them. Only a handful of top pilots left in 1949.
With this strategy, the Italian Motorsport Federation and the organizers of the Mille Miglia wanted to enable many drivers to get started in motorsport. Many drivers, however, were overwhelmed, their vehicles were pure road vehicles and poorly prepared. The technical acceptance was incomplete with the number of participants, so that cars started that were already dangerous in normal traffic. Despite the defused route, the result was an abundance of accidents, one of which was fatal. The two Britons James Cohen and Reg Hignett had an accident with their Healey 2400 on a bridge about 35 kilometers after taking off from Brescia. While Hignett died instantly, Cohen was admitted to hospital with serious injuries. After being transported back to Great Britain, he died a few weeks later of the consequences of his serious injuries.
The change in the start procedure was well received. From now on you could read the start time as a start number on the respective vehicles. This made it possible for the spectators to simply calculate the previous driving time of the participants and thus always to know about the course of the race. The start time of the eventual winner Clemente Biondetti was 06:24; hence his start number 624. Luigi Fagioli , who finished eleventh , had the number 424 and started the race at 04:24.
The race was clearly a matter for the factory Ferrari from the start . Only Franco Rol was able to stand up to the Ferrari drivers in his private Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Competizione Berlinetta and ended up third in the overall standings. After 1938 , 1947 and 1948, Clemente Biondetti won his fourth Mille Miglia, the third in a row, and became the most successful driver in the 1000-mile race. His team-mate Felice Bonetto , who was still leading in Rome, came in second .
