The 23rd Mille Miglia took place on April 28 and 29, 1956 and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.

Before the race

A race on public roads through half of Northern Italy was felt by many drivers and officials in international motorsport to be out of date in 1956. The organizers had created additional problems for the race in 1955 by opening the competition to a flood of amateur racers. 534 vehicles were at the start and the consequence were many serious accidents that brought lasting criticism of the race. Although it was dismantled in 1956, the racing classes were streamlined and the number of participants could be reduced to 365, many international racing teams and drivers stayed away from the race.

The British racing teams almost completely waived their participation. Neither Jaguar nor Aston Martin factory cars were at the start. Only HWM was represented with a racing car with a Jaguar engine. Co-owner Baron John Heath had a fatal accident in the race. This accident was one of a total of three fatal incidents and caused further severe criticism in the English specialist press after the race. Heath came off the road on the wet track before Ravenna and overturned in a ditch. A day later, he died from his injuries at a local hospital. At the start was Tommy Wisdom , who tackled his tenth Mille Miglia on an Austin-Healey 100 S.

What was possible for English racing teams, a retreat from the Mille Miglia, even if this race had been part of the sports car world championship since 1953, was impossible for the Italian sports car manufacturers Ferrari and Maserati . Both Scuderia Ferrari and the Maserati racing department took part in the race with great input of materials. At Ferrari two 290 MM , two 860 Monza and a 250 GT SWB were prepared for the race. The cars were driven by the five works drivers who also competed for the Scuderia in the Formula 1 World Championship . Juan Manuel Fangio and Eugenio Castellotti were entrusted with the 12-cylinder 290MM, Luigi Musso and Peter Collins , who was accompanied by the British photographer Louis Klemantaski as co-driver, piloted the 4-cylinder 860. Olivier Gendebien , with co-driver Jacques Washer, drove the 250 GT.

At Maserati, after the official motorsport activities of Mercedes-Benz had ended, their works driver Stirling Moss had been hired, who drove a 350 S with a Fantuzzi body . As on his record drive the year before, his co-driver was the British motor sport journalist Denis Jenkinson . The two 300 S drove Piero Taruffi and Cesare Perdisa while Jean Behra in a 150 S sat. Moss wasn't happy about the Maserati team leadership's decision to let him drive the Experimental 350S. The 350 S had a more powerful engine than the 300 S and was developed by Giulio Alfieri .

In addition to many private reports from Italy, the Osca MT4s are worth mentioning among the vehicles , which were driven with some factory support by Luigi Villoresi , among others . Among the drivers, alongside the veterans Franco Cortese and Giovanni Bracco, the young Ludovico Scarfiotti made his debut in a major international race.

Porsche was factory represented from Germany and Renault came from France with Dauphines to the start in Brescia. Maurice Trintignant , Louis Rosier and Paul Frère could be won as drivers . The participation of Mercedes-Benz was something special. A total of 14 vehicles from the German brand were at the start, including six 300 SLs . Even though they were all privately registered, it was obvious on site that the vehicles were purely works cars, even though the team had officially withdrawn from motorsport completely at the end of the previous year. The technical and logistical support was in no way inferior to the factory work of Ferrari and Maserati.

The course of the race

The first phase of the race was dominated by Castellotti (Ferrari), who was in the lead on the way to Padua ahead of Taruffi (Maserati), Musso (Ferrari), Perdisa (Maserati), Moss (Maserati) and Collins (Ferrari). This order changed on the narrow streets before and after Ravenna. Although Castellotti was always in front of Taruffi, the two Mercedes drivers Wolfgang von Trips and Fritz Riess were now third and fourth behind them . The sensation, however, were the two OSCA drivers Giulio Cabianca and Umberto Maglioli , who were fifth and seventh with their small 1.2-liter 4-cylinder racing cars.

After Ravenna Taruffi took the lead in the pouring rain, but soon retired due to a brake failure. The brake system had got so wet in the rain that the Maserati had a total brake failure and Taruffi could no longer drive. Wolfgang von Trips took the lead along the Adriatic coast . Riess was third behind Castellotti. On the fast passages towards Pescara, the OSCA drivers could not keep up with the pace of the leaders and fell behind in the overall standings.

Stirling Moss had an accident just before the turning point in Rome and had to give up. Von Trips had already collided with a slower participant while overtaking and had to give up as well. Rome passed Castellotti first, so an overall victory seemed almost impossible. Because so far in the long history of the race no driver who was in the lead in Rome (the largely unknown Austrian Gotfrid Köchert was fourth in the interim classification in his Porsche 550 , but later retired after a defect) could win it. But Castellotti broke with this fact and won in Brescia by more than ten minutes ahead of his team-mate Peter Collins. Luigi Musso in third, Juan Manuel Fangio in fourth and Oliver Gendebien in fifth completed the total triumph for Ferrari. Maserati experienced a debacle. Two works cars had broken down and after several repairs, Jean Behra was only 20th overall. Behind the Ferraris, the three Mercedes drivers Paul von Metternich , Wolfgang Seidel and Jacques Pollet crossed the finish line in sixth, seventh and eighth. Cabianca finished ninth after a brave ride. Fritz Riess, who had been in the lead for a long time but was plagued by engine problems, came in tenth. After more than 1500 km, he was only 11 seconds faster than the Italian Roberto Sgorbati , who achieved the remarkable eleventh place overall in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta SV and won the touring car class.

Trivia

The finish within the Renault team was surprising and remarkable. Maurice Trintignant, Paul Frère and Louis Rosier had to admit defeat to a woman. The Belgian Gilberte Thirion was 28 minutes faster than her fastest male team-mate (Trintignant) at the finish and reached 82nd place overall.
