The Triumph TR2 was a roadster from the British car manufacturer Triumph based on the Triumph TR1 prototype presented at the 1952 Geneva Motor Show . Of the first TR model series sold, 8,636 copies were built.

history

At the London Motor Show in 1952, the TS20, the prototype of a roadster, was presented. This was extremely difficult to drive and reached a top speed of only 130 km / h. The British test and racing driver Ken Richardson described it as a death trap . But he was won over by BRM for the development of the TR2. The shortcomings were eliminated and the TR2 was presented at the 1953 Geneva Motor Show. The car was produced and sold from August 1953. It became an affordable roadster with good performance. By the time it was replaced by the TR3 in October 1955, 8,628 units had been built. The chassis was still based on that of the TR1.

The Triumph TR2 was also sent to international racing at the factory and achieved 28th place out of 450 participants when it took part in the 1954 Mille Miglia and fifth in its class in Le Mans in June 1954. The works drivers Gatsonides and Slotemaker won the Alpine Cup with their works Triumph TR2 in July 1954.

The designation "TR" for the series was derived from the abbreviation for the previous Experimental Triumph, the "TR-X" (TRiumph eXperimental). The numbers after the "TR" (TR2, TR3 etc.) are sequential model numbers.

The engine had four cylinders, was considered robust and achieved an output of 90 hp. An overdrive was available at an additional cost. This was enough to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 11.9 seconds. The top speed was 170 km / h. The list price in 1953 was £ 600.
