The Triumph Italia was a sports coupé with an Italian special body based on the Triumph TR3 . The official name was Italia 2000 coupé .

Triumph Italia

Salvatore Ruffino imported Standard-Triumph for Italy in 1958 . He wanted to produce his own sports coupe. His choice fell on a body design submitted by Giovanni Michelotti . Triumph did not produce closed sports cars at the time. Ruffino had the Italia manufactured on his own account, i. that is, it was not an official Triumph vehicle.

The vehicle used the full vehicle frame, drivetrain and axles from the Triumph TR3. The body and interior were independent and were completely manufactured in Italy by Vignale . The steel coupé body made the driving experience better and the road holding significantly more stable than with the TR3. Production began in 1959. The vehicles were mainly sold in Italy, the USA and France.

The design of the Italia was important for Triumph because Giovanni Michelotti, who had previously designed the Standard Vanguard and the Triumph Herald, has now also been commissioned to design the successor to the TR3. Many elements of the Italia can be recognized in the appearance of the TR4 .

Ruffino had planned to produce a total of 1000 Italia. Since there were problems with sales in cooperation with Triumph, this number was not reached. It is believed that only about 300 copies were made in total. In 1962, when production of the TR3B ended, production ceased.
