The Triumph TR3 was a roadster produced by the British manufacturer Triumph from 1955 to 1962 . The TR3 appeared in September 1955. By 1957, 13,377 units were built. In the same year the revised version TR3A came on the market, the production of which ran with 58,236 copies until 1962. Parallel to the newly released TR4 , the TR3B was sold in the USA. It had blind disks and a more powerful engine with 100 hp. 3,331 of him were built.
TR3
The TR3 was powered by a four-cylinder in-line engine with an underneath camshaft, displacement 1991 cm³. Compared to its predecessor, the TR2 , it received larger SU carburettors , which increased the output by 5 hp. In 1956 the cylinder head was modified. This increased the power to 100 SAE PS. The maximum torque was 160 Nm at 3000 rpm; the top speed 170 km / h.
As a novelty, the TR3 had disc brakes on the front wheels . Most of the models were exported to the USA . Only 1286 right-hand drive examples remained in Great Britain. The basic model cost £ 650. In 1961 the two-seater roadster in Germany cost 9,155 DM. The average consumption of the car was around 10–12 liters of petrol per 100 km.
TR3A
The TR3 was revised in 1957 and primarily the appearance was modified. The TR3A received a new, wider radiator grille, door handles on the outside, a lockable glove compartment and a tool set as standard. A total of 58,236 copies were built in the four years of its production. The TR3A is therefore the best-selling model after the TR6 and TR7 . It is estimated that only about 8,500 wagons exist today. The entry-level model was $ 2,840,
The designation "TR3A" was never used at the factory. The appended "A" was colloquial for "America", as this model was largely delivered to the USA.
TR3B
The B version of the TR3 was specially built for the American market. The new TR 4 was designed to be too comfortable for American drivers. For this model series, around 2000 chassis (all with the serial numbers beginning with the abbreviation TCF) were taken as the basis, provided with the engine and gearbox of the TR4 and painted in black, white, red or “powder blue” and shipped to the USA . A total of 3331 chassis were produced by the TR3B. The first 500 received TR3 engines and thus became TR3B with TSF chassis numbers. All TR3B models had fully synchronized transmissions. All other chassis numbers started with TCF and were equipped with the 2198 cc engines of the TR4.
A total of around 300 TR3A and TR3B chassis with axles and drive trains without a body were delivered to Italy and completed there as Triumph Italia .
