Umberto Maglioli (born June 5, 1928 in Bioglio near Biella , † February 6, 1999 in Monza ) was an Italian racing driver.
Career
The large domain Maglioli were the sports car race in which he has a long and successful motorsport - career looked back. In 1951 Lancia signed him and he finished second in the Mille Miglia . In 1953 he won the Targa Florio for the Italian team. In 1954 , he was able to win the Carrera Panamericana , probably the toughest long-distance race in the world, in a Ferrari 375 Plus . In 1956, he won the Targa Florio for Porsche , a very important victory for the Zuffenhausen-based brand, which with its vehicles that were still small at the time had only outsider chances and only became an overall contender for victory in the sports car world championship 10 years later .
In 1968 he won the Targa Florio for the third time in a Porsche 907 , this time alongside Vic Elford . He was also able to register as winner in a Ferrari 275P alongside his partner Mike Parkes in the Sebring 12-hour race in 1964 .
In the 1950s, Maglioli was a regular guest driver for Ferrari. He thanked the Scuderia for this trust during the 1954 Automobile World Championship with third place at the Italian Grand Prix when he shared a car with José Froilán González . In the following year he jumped in again as reserve driver and brought a Ferrari 625 at the Grand Prix of Argentina also in third place in the club with Giuseppe Farina and Maurice Trintignant under the most difficult conditions, since the drivers had to take turns in the extreme heat - apart from Winner Juan Manuel Fangio .
During the automobile world championship in 1956 he started in three races with a Maserati 250F and his last race in Formula 1 was seen in a Formula 2 - Porsche 718 during the race at the Nürburgring in 1957 .
In the field of drivers, Maglioli's prudence, which almost came close to equanimity, was legendary. On the occasion of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1967, photographs by Rainer W. Schlegelmilch are known, showing Maglioli in elegant, sporty street clothes and fashionable sunglasses, with a slightly mocking, distant smile on her face. Sometimes he resembled a wealthy entrepreneur in the fashion industry , just to have fun putting a tank funnel on his head as a sunscreen for the next picture - he obviously didn't care what he looked like with it.
