1956 Buenos Aires 1000 km race
The third 1000 km race of Buenos Aires , also Grand Prix Buenos Aires 1000 Kilometers, Autódromo Municipal y Avenida Paz , took place on January 29, 1956 at the Autódromo Municipal-Avenida Paz and was the first race of the sports car world championship of that year .
Before the race
The 1956 World Sports Car Championship began with the race in Argentina , and that year comprised only five racing events. After the catastrophe at the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1955 , this 24-hour race was driven this year without world championship status.
The race
After the end of the motorsport activities of Daimler-Benz , Juan Manuel Fangio did not return to Maserati, but switched to the big competitor Ferrari . Also Stirling Moss was required after the end of Mercedes without a contract and was designed by Maserati.
The victory in the 1000 km race was not only Moss' first success for his new employer, but also Maserati's first ever victory in the World Sports Car Championship. Moss won the race with his teammate Carlos Menditéguy in a Maserati 300S with a two-lap lead over the factory Ferrari 857S of Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill . Overall third was Jean Behra and José Froilán González , who drove another factory Maserati 300S.
