Francisco Sacco "Chico" Landi (born July 14, 1907 in São Paulo ; † June 7, 1989 there ) was a Brazilian racing driver. Chico Landi was the first Brazilian who could make an impression on the professional world in the Formula 1 era of the 1950s.
Career
Chico Landi's motorsport career began in the 1930s with races in Brazil, he won the Rio de Janeiro Grand Prix three times (1941, 1947 and 1948). This was held on the demanding, serpentine Gávea race track, nicknamed "the devil's springboard". He became internationally known at races in Argentina in 1947, and so he was the first Brazilian to compete in Europe. In 1948 he won the Formula 2 - Gran-Premio di Bari (against such well-known drivers as Luigi Villoresi , Achille Varzi , Tazio Nuvolari and Giuseppe Farina ).
In the 1950s he drove either private Ferraris or Maseratis on various missions. He achieved his best placement in the 1956 World Automobile Championship at the Argentine Grand Prix in Buenos Aires , when he achieved 4th place on a Maserati 250F , replaced by Gerino Gerini in the race .
A little later he turned more to his actual job: Like many of his English and French driver colleagues at the time, he also ran a car spare parts and repair shop in his hometown.
For motorsport but returned Landi at the end of his life as a functionary back. As manager of the Interlagos racing circuit , the 78-year-old was responsible for the consolidation of the circuit from 1985 onwards. Four years later the newly elected mayor of that city removed him from his post. Only a few months later, Landi died, who had at least lived to see three compatriots in Formula 1 racing for the title - Emerson Fittipaldi , Nelson Piquet and Ayrton Senna .
