Gran Premio di Bari
The Gran Premio di Bari (German: Grand Prix of Bari ) was an automobile race that was held nine times in the southern Italian port of Bari from 1947 to 1956 . Over time, the race was advertised for different racing classes, namely for Formula 2 , Formula 1 and sports car races. The races of the Formula 1 era did not have world championship status .
history
The Bari Grand Prix was organized by the Automobile Club de Bari; responsible was Renzo Castagneto, who also organized the Mille Miglia . From the very beginning, Castagneto tried to make the race interesting for works teams in order to achieve the highest possible sporting level. The efforts were at least successful with regard to Italian and French racing car manufacturers; British designers who established themselves in formulas 1 and 2 in the early 1950s, however, never appeared in Bari.
In the first edition in 1947, which was advertised for Grand Prix vehicles, Alfa Romeo took part in the factory with two cars for Achille Varzi and Consalvo Sanesi . In 1948 and 1949, when the Bari Grand Prix was a Formula 2 race, Cisitalia and Ferrari got involved with works teams. Ferrari provided the winner with Chico Landi and Alberto Ascari . In 1950 and 1951 the races in Bari were advertised for Formula 1, but they did not have world championship status. In both years Alfa Romeo dominated again with the Tipo 158 and 159 "Alfetta" . In the years 1952 and 1953 , in which the automobile world championship was held according to the rules of Formula 2, there were no monopostor races in Bari. In 1952 a sports car race took place instead, in 1953 there was no automobile race in the city. 1954 was the last time a Formula 1 race - again without a World Championship - took place in Bari, in which the Ferrari and Maserati factory teams took part. In 1955 and 1956 there were still sports car races with different classes in Bari. From 1957 there was no new edition.
In the 21st century, the Italian Old Cars Club reactivated the Bari Grand Prix for classic car races, which have been held at regular intervals since then.
Racetrack
The Gran Premio di Bari was a street race that was held on public roads in the center of Bari. The circuit, called the Circuito del Lungomare , included a large part of the beach promenade (ital .: Lungomare) and the port and thus ran directly along the shores of the Adriatic Sea . The return trip led, among other things, through a residential area. The route, which only varied in details over the years, was 5.51 km long. With the exception of the last edition in 1956, the race was driven counterclockwise.
