The 1952 German Grand Prix took place on August 3 at the Nürburgring and was the sixth of eight races in the 1952 World Cup .

background

Although the numerous British teams and drivers had not entered the German Grand Prix, the organizers were able to count on 34 entries, even two more than at Silverstone . Ferrari again appeared in the usual line-up of Ascari - Farina - Taruffi , supplemented by four private entries. Jean Behra , who had recovered, took on for Gordini . For this, Prince Bira had to vacate his place. For the first time, the Maserati factory team , which Felice Bonetto sent into the race, who, curiously, at least during training, drove with a tobacco pipe in his mouth, was there. The field was filled with numerous reports from German drivers who were normally not represented in international races. The best known among them was Paul Pietsch at Veritas.

training

The training offered a few surprises. The two Ferraris from Ascari and Farina were unbeatable, but the first row was supplemented by the Gordinis from Trintignant and Manzon , while Taruffi was in the second row. Paul Pietsch also made it into the second row with his Veritas. Only 30 of the 34 registered drivers took part in the race.

run

At the start, Ascari pulled ahead and came back as the leader from Farina from the first lap, in which seven drivers, including Paul Pietsch, were eliminated. Up to the penultimate lap everything seemed to be developing as we were used to from the previous races. Ascari pulled out of the field, followed by Farina and Taruffi. But this time Farina could not get away from Taruffi, and so the winner of the Swiss GP was able to overtake Farina twice. On the penultimate lap, however, his axis broke; he was forced to drive so slowly that the Swiss private Ferrari driver Rudolf Fischer could pass him. Ascari also had a problem on the penultimate lap and drove into the pits to have oil refilled. This allowed Farina to pull out a 9 second lead over Ascari. But Ascari managed to overtake Farina again on the last lap, to pull out a lead of 14 seconds over Farina and to win the race. As this event took place on a single lap, it was not reflected in the lap tables and so Ascari has officially been in the lead for almost four races without a break since the third lap of the Belgian Grand Prix . With his victory, Ascari was not only the new world champion of 1952, he had also achieved the maximum possible number of points (four wins and four fastest laps) that a driver could achieve according to the regulations in force at the time, which only included the four best results out of eight Race scored.
