Grand Prix of Germany 1929
The IV Grand Prix of Germany , also known as the Grand Prix of Nations or Grand Prix of Nations for sports cars , took place on July 14, 1929 on the Nürburgring , consisting of the north and south loops . It led over 18 laps of 28.3 km each, which corresponds to a total distance of 509.4 km.
The race
The organizers' generous prize money brought a strong field to the Nürburgring in 1929. 38,000 Reichsmarks (today corresponds to approx. 134,000 euros ) were given to the winner, after all 20,000 Reichsmarks (today approx. 70,000 euros) for the overall runner-up. In the race, it was found that the light and agile work - Bugatti heavy and unwieldy Mercedes-Benz SSK were also superior at the Nurburgring. Even a recognized top driver like Rudolf Caracciola could not compensate for the disadvantage of the almost 2-ton car. Caracciola had taken the lead at the beginning of the race, but retired in the fifth round with a connecting rod damaged. After 18 laps and a driving time of more than 4 hours, Louis Chiron in the Bugatti won well ahead of his brand colleague Philippe de Rothschild . The best Mercedes-Benz was the third-placed SSK from August Momberger and Max von Arco-Zinneberg .
