The 1991 German Grand Prix took place on July 28th at the Hockenheimring and was the ninth race of the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Stefan Johansson was replaced by Alex Caffi at Footwork and ended his Formula 1 career with the record at the time of having achieved the most podium places without a win. This mark was only reached at the 2009 Malaysian Grand Prix by Nick Heidfeld and exceeded two years later in the same place .

Due to contractual obligations in the Japanese Formula 3000 , Johnny Herbert could not compete in the German GP. The Lotus team then gave the local pay driver Michael Bartels the chance to make his Formula 1 debut.

training

As a result of their results during the first half of the season, in addition to Fondmetal and Coloni, teams Brabham , Footwork and AGS instead of Jordan , BMS and Modena had to take part in the pre-qualification.

Due to a puncture, Ayrton Senna had one of the worst accidents of his career during the first free practice. His McLaren MP4 / 6 overturned several times after driving over a curb at an awkward angle. Senna escaped unharmed. Another serious accident occurred on Saturday morning in the east corner when Érik Comas got off the track in his Ligier JS35B and the car caught fire. Comas completed the second qualifying in a T-Car , but missed the qualification.

The drivers Nigel Mansell , Ayrton Senna, Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese qualified for the first four starting positions with lap times that differed by only around 0.35 seconds. Alain Prost , who secured fifth place on the grid as the faster of the two Ferrari drivers , was around 1.5 seconds slower than Nigel Mansell on his best lap. Jordan driver Andrea de Cesaris , who followed Prost's team-mate Jean Alesi in seventh place, was already 3.2 seconds short of the absolute best time. The two Benetton pilots Nelson Piquet and Roberto Moreno followed in eighth and ninth place in front of Pierluigi Martini in the Minardi M191 and Bertrand Gachot in the second Jordan 191 .

run

Starting grid (shortly before the start of the race)

After a good start, Mansell immediately set himself apart from his competitors. Berger initially followed in second place in front of Senna, Prost, Alesi and Patrese. On the 13th lap he lost contact with the chasing group due to an unscheduled pit stop.

With Mansell's pit stop, Alesi, who completed the race without changing tires in the meantime, took over the top position for two laps from lap 19 onwards, as Senna and Prost had also made their stops shortly before and were therefore briefly behind. By the 37th lap, Patrese overtook Prost and Senna as well as Alesi and thus established a one-two lead for the two Williams drivers.

In the duel for fourth place behind Alesi, Senna and Prost collided easily. The French dropped out. For the second time in a row, Senna was stuck on the last lap of the race due to a lack of fuel. In contrast to the Grand Prix of Great Britain two weeks earlier, however, the distance covered was not enough to be classified within the points, but only as seventh. His team-mate Berger also had only a small amount of fuel left at the end of the race. However, he regularly crossed the finish line in fourth place and only stopped during the run-out lap. The two Jordan pilots de Cesaris and Gachot finished fifth and sixth.

With the 16 championship points gained from the double victory, Williams took the lead in the constructors' championship just ahead of McLaren .
