Reports
background
As in the previous year, at the 1957 German Grand Prix , the small, less exciting starting field of Formula 1 was expanded in such a way that the Formula 2 race of the Formula 2 season 1958 took place at the same time on the Nordschleife. The drivers in the Formula 2 classification were counted for both training and the race result in the Formula 1 classification, but could not score any points for the drivers' world championship. Two weeks before the Grand Prix was not the scoring for the World Cup Grand Prix de Caen played, the Stirling Moss on a private Cooper of the Rob Walker Racing Team won.
After Luigi Musso's fatal accident and a race with only three vehicles, Scuderia Ferrari was again registered with four vehicles for the 1958 German Grand Prix. The fourth cockpit was given to Phil Hill , the new regular driver and 1961 driver world champion in a Ferrari. In addition to Phil Hill, Peter Collins , Mike Hawthorn and Wolfgang Graf Berghe started trips for Ferrari. In contrast to his teammates, Phil Hill competed in the Formula 2 classification. For Collins it was the last race; he had a fatal accident in this race.
BRM started unchanged with the driver pairing Harry Schell and Jean Behra , Vanwall only used two cars for Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks , Stuart Lewis-Evans paused for one race, but drove for Vanwall for the rest of the season. Cooper started again with Jack Brabham and Roy Salvadori , the team used a third car in the Formula 2 classification. Bruce McLaren , later founder of the McLaren racing team, made his Grand Prix debut with it. The fifth works team entered for the race was Lotus with Graham Hill and Cliff Allison .
Other drivers in private vehicles competed in both categories. In the Formula 1 category, these were Maurice Trintignant for the Rob Walker Racing Team and Hans Herrmann , Troy Ruttman and Joakim Bonnier for Scuderia Centro Sud , who fielded private Maserati 250Fs . For Bonnier and Ruttman it was the last race for the Scuderia Centro Sud, Bonnier drove the rest of the season for his own team, Ruttman withdrew from Formula 1 and only drove one more race in Formula 1 than the Indianapolis 500 in 1960 counted for the 1960 automobile world championship .
No former winner of the German Grand Prix took part in the race; Ferrari had previously won five teams. In the drivers 'championship, Hawthorn was seven points ahead of Moss, while Ferrari was eleven points ahead of Vanwall in the constructors' championship.
training
Training for the 1958 German Grand Prix was a duel between the two top teams Ferrari and Vanwall. Hawthorn achieved pole position for the third time in the 1958 Formula 1 season . His fastest practice time was 9: 14.0 minutes, eleven seconds faster than the pole time of the previous year. Brooks qualified second, one second behind Hawthorn's time, ahead of teammate Moss, who was more than five seconds slower. Two other Ferraris started behind the two Vanwall, Collins in fourth and Graf Berghe von Trips in fifth.
The midfield was headed by Cooper, Salvadori in the Werkscooper qualified in sixth, Trintignant in the private Cooper of the Rob Walker Racing Team behind. Both BRMs ahead of Phil Hills Ferrari completed the top ten. Phil Hill drove the best training time in the Formula 2 classification, a large number of the Formula 1 drivers qualified behind him.
McLaren reached twelfth on the grid in his debut race, Edgar Barth started for Porsche from 13th place and the best Lotus driver was Ivor Bueb in 16th place. Some drivers drove training times that would have been enough for better positioning, but were classified in the rear field, which leads to it is likely that there were several relegations on the starting line-up. Graham Hill, for example, started from 22nd place with no time, ahead of Christian Goethals with time, who in turn started ahead of Allison, who was more than two seconds faster.
run
Moss won the starting duel between Vanwall and Ferrari and led immediately after the start in front of his teammate Brooks, who fell behind Hawthorn and Collins on the first lap of the race. Ruttman did not start due to an engine failure, Brian Naylor retired after just one lap with a defective fuel pump. In addition, Brabham and Bonnier collided with each other, for both the race was also over on the first lap. In the two following laps of the race, the positions at the top remained unchanged until Moss gave up the race with a defective magneto. Herrmann, Carel Godin de Beaufort and Dick Gibson had already retired with engine damage. The high failure rate in the start phase of the race was continued on lap four by Goethals, Graham Hill and Behra, all of whom had to give up due to technical defects.
After Moss was eliminated, Ferrari took first and second place in the race, the lead over Brooks was a few seconds. Hawthorn led the race for one lap before team-mate Collins overtook him. In the following laps Brooks narrowed the gap to the Ferraris continuously and reached the connection on lap nine. At the same time, Wolfgang Seidel retired with a suspension damage, Schell's brakes failed, which meant that none of the BRMs reached their destination. On lap nine, Brooks dueled Hawthorn for second place and overtook this position on lap ten. Collins also passed Brooks, giving the Vanwall driver the lead. Collins increased the pace to keep up with Brooks and lost control of his car in the “Pflanzgarten” section. Collins got off the track and rolled over several times. He was thrown out of the car and suffered severe head injuries on a tree. He later died of these injuries in the hospital, causing Ferrari to lose another driver in a fatal accident after 1957.
Hawthorn retired one lap later with a damaged clutch, which meant that Brooks finished the race in the lead and won. For him it was the second win of the season, Vanwall won race number three, the only time at the German Grand Prix. Salvadori took second place in the factory Cooper, for him it was the second and final podium finish. Trintignant completed the podium with third place for the Rob Walker Racing Team. The last points were given to Graf Berghe von Trips for fourth place, no points were awarded for fifth, as the fifth-placed McLaren started in the Formula 2 classification, which he won ahead of Barth and Ian Burgess . Drivers with Formula 2 cars were not entitled to points in this race, but drivers with Formula 1 cars did not move up in the ranking either, so that the next-placed from the Formula 1 ranking, Allison in tenth place in the Cooper, did not receive any points. It was not until the 1966 German Grand Prix that Formula 2 cars started again together, but from that point on they were classified separately. Drivers with Formula 1 cars then moved up in this race and thus received points. A total of eleven cars reached the destination.
In the drivers' championship, Hawthorn was six points ahead of Moss, while Brooks moved up four positions to third. Collins dropped to fourth place, while Salvadori also climbed four places up to fifth. There were no shifts in position in the constructors' championship, but Vanwall caught up with the leading Ferrari team, which was already subject to the cancellation rules. Theoretically, Ferrari led with six points ahead of Vanwall, but effectively only with four points because of the deleted results. In the three remaining races, only drivers who already had at least four points could become world champions; among the constructors, three teams with Ferrari, Vanwall and Cooper still had a chance of winning the title.
