Roy Francesco Salvadori (born May 12, 1922 in Dovercourt , Essex , England , † June 3, 2012 ) was a British automobile racing driver .

Career

Born the son of Italian emigrants , his motorsport career began in 1947 in a large-capacity Alfa Romeo . In general, in contrast to his English compatriots, he seemed to have a noticeable inclination towards Italian manufacturers.

In Formula 1 via sports car races

He came into Formula 1 only after having been used in various high-class cars in sports car races . He drove a 2-liter Maserati for the “Gilby Engineering Team” Sidney Greenes or a Frazer Nash at the races in Brooklands . For Greene, he also drove a Maserati 250F between 1954 and 1956 with considerable placements in various Grand Prix races that were not part of the world championship.

The legend of Goodwood

In the race in the Easter Monday Goodwood meeting that was not part of the world championship , Salvadori and his Maserati met Ken Wharton , who was considered his arch-rival, and his BRM 16-cylinder. Only the better start and the consistent blocking kept Ken ahead of Salvadori, who was unable to overtake the BRM, which is much slower but wider in corners. Wharton consistently drove the battle line. His engine also lost oil, which was deposited on the windshield and glasses of his pursuer. Salvadori obviously lost his nerve and gestured threateningly. During the 19th lap he tried to get past the inside of the Lavant curve and collided. Both drivers were able to continue after the spin, but Salvadori had to retire with a damaged clutch while Ken Wharton won the race. "Ken was one of the toughest drivers, I should have known better ..." said Roy Salvadori in retrospect. Both drivers then received a gold or silver pocket watch from the organizer, on the inside of which was engraved “In memory of an unforgettable race weekend” .

Moved to Cooper and Aston Martin

The Cooper team and Aston Martin then asked whether Salvadori was not available for official racing events within the championship. Significantly, the unlikely front-end engine Aston-Martin was not used until 1959, when it was already technically obsolete. During the Formula 1 season in 1957 , Salvadori also started for Vanwall when their drivers had to pause due to illness or injury. But in the end it was he - and not the more highly rated Jack Brabham  - who scored the first points for the Cooper-Climax team with fifth place at the Grand Prix of Great Britain .

Victory in Le Mans

Salvadori's greatest motorsport success was the overall victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1959 with his partner Carroll Shelby in an Aston Martin DBR1 .

End of career

Later, Roy Salvadori, who had the reputation of a dogged but never unfair fighter, almost came to his due monoposto victory. At the US Grand Prix during the 1961 Formula 1 season , he again drove a Cooper for the Yeoman Credit Team. Lap by lap he was working his way up to the leading Innes Ireland on Lotus as runner- up when the Cooper's engine and with it his hopes burst.

At the end of 1962, the 40-year-old Salvadori retired from Formula 1 and a few years later from sports car races in order to devote himself to his career as a car dealer. For a short time he was seen again in Formula 1, but this time as team manager of the Cooper - Maserati team between 1966 and 1967. After that, he finally said goodbye to racing.
