Trophée d'Auvergne 1962
The 1962 Trophée d'Auvergne took place on July 15 at the Circuit de Charade and was the ninth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
In order to be able to take part in this year's Trophée d'Auvergne, 67 teams submitted their entries within the registration period. It was actually only 65 participants; the two British John Gaston and David Hobbs each reported two different vehicles. While both reports from Gaston were not accepted by the organizer, Hobbs was allowed to start with a Lotus Elite . 34 vehicles were allowed to take part in the race, with Tony Lanfranchi having an engine failure on his Elva Mk.6 during training, which ultimately resulted in 33 vehicles at the start.
Porsche , Abarth and Bonnet were represented with factory cars. Porsche went Edgar Barth on a Porsche 356B Carrera at the start. Abarth had brought five vehicles to the Auvergne , which were driven by Tommy Spychiger and Hans Herrmann , among others . The René Bonnet Djets were piloted by Gérard Laureau , Jean Vinatier and Paul Armagnac .
The best training time was achieved by Peter Arundell on a Lotus 23 with a time of 3,54,300 minutes . Arundell was unable to take part in the race due to illness and was replaced by Alan Rees , who drove the Lotus to second place in the overall standings. The winner was Carlo-Maria Abate in a Ferrari 250 GTO from Scuderia SSS Repubblica di Venezia .
