Peter Ryan (born June 10, 1940 in Philadelphia , † July 2, 1962 in Reims ) was a Canadian racing car driver .

Career

Peter Ryan began his career in local racing in Canada in the late 1950s and soon gained some great results. His victory in the 1961 Canadian Grand Prix in Mosport on a Lotus 18 - Climax , which was not part of the World Championship , brought him to Europe and Colin Chapman gave him a works contract .

In 1962 he was to contest a full Formula Junior season for Lotus. At the end of 1961 he also started his only automobile world championship race. At the US Grand Prix he finished 9th, but four laps behind the winner Innes Ireland , who gave Lotus the first Grand Prix victory.

Ryan got off to a brilliant start in 1962 and won the first race of the junior formula in Mallory Park . The second run - the “Coupe de Vitesse des Juniors” on the Reims race track  - ended tragically for him. In a collision with Bill Moss' vehicle , he was thrown out of his car and died of internal injuries on the racetrack.
