The North American Racing Team (also known as NART known) was designed by Luigi Chinetti established that with successes in motorsport for Ferrari in America wanted to advertise.

Racing

Thanks to the financial support of gentleman drivers George Arents and Jan de Vroom , Chinetti was able to found the racing team in 1957. Because of his great sales success of road vehicles in the important American market, there was already a close relationship between Chinetti and Ferrari and served as the basis for a generous supply of Ferrari racing cars.

The team competed in the most important sports car races such as the 24 Hours of Daytona , the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 1000 km endurance races in Europe and the USA for over three decades . The first race was the Sebring 12-hour race in March 1958 with a Ferrari 250 GT .

Curiously, it was a Ferrari 158 used by NART in 1964 , with John Surtees at the wheel, that won the Formula 1 World Championship . In protest against a refusal to homologate a new mid-engine design by the Italian motorsport authorities, the Ferrari factory cars started in the blue and white NART livery.

The culmination of NART racing successes came in 1965, when a Ferrari 250LM used by NART , driven by Jochen Rindt , Masten Gregory (and unofficially also allegedly by Ed Hugus ) became the last Ferrari to win at Le Mans.

Further NART successes include 3rd place in the 1967 24-hour race in Daytona, which secured a triple victory for Ferrari behind two factory 330P4s . The Ferrari 365 GTB / 4 was then called Competizione . With this model, NART took 2nd place behind a Porsche 911 in the Daytona 24-hour race in 1973 .

NART drove Ferraris until 1982 and participated in more than 200 races with more than 100 different drivers.

Ferrari 275 GTB / 4 NART Spyder

One Ferrari model even bore the name NART: the Ferrari 275 GTB / 4 NART Spyder presented in 1967 . This was a convertible version of the Ferrari 275 GTB / 4 , which was built by Scaglietti at the suggestion of Luigi Chinetti . The original order for 25 cars was never fulfilled as the car was unexpectedly difficult to sell. In the end, only ten vehicles were built. However, they are now very popular. Fifty years after the end of production, tens of millions are paid for individual cars. In 2013, a copy reached a purchase price of US $ 27.5 million.
