Daytona 24 hour race
The 24 Hours of Daytona , official Rolex 24 at Daytona , is since 1966 on the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach , Florida be transmitted sports car racing , which is currently part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is.
The event
The race takes place in late January / early February, so the night is much longer than in mid-June at the more famous Le Mans 24-hour race . The mixture of the steep curves of the four kilometer long oval and the sections in the infield is unique for long-distance races.
Sports car races were held in Daytona as early as 1962. The distance varied from three hours (1962–1963) to 2000 kilometers (1964–1965).
The race has been sponsored by Rolex since 1991 , and the class winners receive a Rolex Daytona watch.
Remarkable
After the triple victory in 1967 against the GT40 competing vehicle from Ford, Ferrari gave the 365 GTB / 4 road sports car the nickname Daytona .
Depending on the count, Porsche vehicles have won a total of 20 times, in 2003 even the drivers Jörg Bergmeister and Timo Bernhard achieved overall victory with a Porsche 996 GT3 RS for the team The Racer's Group, which competes in the GT class . A success against the Daytona prototypes , which first appeared in 2003 , which the organizers did not like to see, so that the starting conditions for the GT-Porsches were drastically difficult in 2004, but they were able to stand up to the Daytona prototypes .
Auto, motor und sport editor Marcus Schurig summarized the consequences of the unexpected 2003 overall success in ams issue 4/2004 as follows: "(...). History almost repeated itself: In 2003 Jörg Bergmeister and Timo Bernhard were able to do one Porsche 911 GT3 won the race, in 2004 the Orbit Porsche took second place overall with Robin Lidell, Jonny Mowlem, Mike Fitzgerald, Joe and Jay Policastro. And that although the organizer had slowed the 911 down dramatically compared to 2003: The tank volume shrank from 100 to 64 liters , the rear spoiler was made smaller, and narrower tires were prescribed. “And we had to pack 90 kilograms of weight,” complained Porsche driver Jörg Bergmeister. The organizers obviously knew what they were doing: They were simply afraid of another GT-Porsche victory (...) "
