Aria Luyendyk

Arie Luyendyk (born September 21, 1953 as Arie Luijendijk in Sommelsdijk , Netherlands ) is a Dutch racing driver . His son Arie Luyendyk junior is also a racing driver.
Career
His career began in the 1970s by winning national titles. In 1977 he won the European Super Vee title. Then he got into Formula 3 . The continued success made him move to the USA in 1984 , where he won the Super Vee straight away. From 1985 Luyendyk drove in the Indy Car Series, where he was rookie of the year , i.e. best new driver, in 1985 . As one of the few top drivers in the series, he moved to the Indy Racing League in 1996 , where he was a regular driver until the end of 1998. From 1999 to 2003 he only competed at the Indy 500.
In 1990, he won the Indy 500 , setting a record valid until 2013 with an average speed of 185.981 mph (299.308 km / h). In 1997 he achieved a second victory at the Indy 500. There are also three pole positions in 1993, 1997 and 1999.
His other achievements include victories at the Daytona 24 Hours and the Sebring 12 Hours .
