Sommelsdijk is a place on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee in South Holland . Together with Nieuwe-Tonge , Middelharnis and Stad aan 't Haringvliet , it formed the municipality of Middelharnis . Since January 1, 2013, this area belongs to the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. Neighboring towns are Melissant , Ouddorp and Dirksland . Sommelsdijk had 7,235 inhabitants on January 1, 2017, making the place the largest settlement on the island.
In the past, Sommelsdijk was the only place on the island that belonged to Zeeland . In 1805 it was given to Holland. In 1866 Sommelsdijk was incorporated into Middelharnis.
