Van Aerssen
The Van Aerssen family as well as the Van Aerssen van Sommelsdijk were among the most influential Dutch families in the Golden Age .
The family came from the southern Netherlands, possibly from the Limburg city of Arcen . This name can also have originated from a patronymic of the name "Aartsz" (Aartszoon).

Van Aerssen van Sommelsdijk
The family came from the city of Antwerp and was of bourgeois origin. In the golden century, the mostly Orange -minded van Aerssens were among the richest families in the Dutch republic.
In 1605 François van Aerssen was raised to the French nobility by the French King Henry IV with the title of knight . Under the pressure that Moritz von Orange exerted on the Dutch knighthood, François van Aerssen was introduced into it in 1619. The same Van Aerssen was in 1636 by Louis XIII. appointed baron . Between the years 1683 and 1770, the van Aerssen family appeared together with the West India Company (WIC) and the city of Amsterdam as one of the three partners of the Suriname Society . In 1770 the family sold their share to Amsterdam for the sum of 700,000 guilders . The lineage of the van Aerssen van Sommelsdijk died out in their male line with François Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijk in 1793.

Van Aerssens van Voshol
Through the marriage (1719) with the heiress from the Van Beieren Schagen family , this name came into the van Aerssen family.
Members of the van Aerssen branch Voshol were raised to the new Dutch nobility in 1822. They received ("from ancient times") the title of baron.
