Adrianne Pieczonka (born March 2, 1963 ) is a Canadian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

She grew up near Toronto in Burlington and graduated from the University of Toronto Opera School . She made her debut with the Canadian Opera Company in 1988 in Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk . She soon moved to Vienna , where she was engaged at the Volksoper from 1989 and at the State Opera from 1991 . In 1995 she made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and in 2004 at the Metropolitan Opera as Lisa in Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades . In the past few years she has mainly worked at the Four Seasons Center in Toronto.

The singer made her concert debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2001 as Elsa with excerpts from Lohengrin , sang in two Mozart matinees in 2002 , took over Elisabeth in Verdi's Don Carlos in 2003 and Marschallin in Rosenkavalier von Hofmannsthal and Strauss in 2004 . In 2014 she played the Empress in the premiere of the opera Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Bavarian State Opera. In 2015 she embodied Leonore in a Claus Guth production of Beethoven's Fidelio in Salzburg , conducted by Franz Welser-Möst .

Although her repertoire ranges from Mozart to Britten , Pieczonka has recently specialized in Wagner roles, in particular Sieglinde in Die Walküre . In fact, she received extensive praise for the Sieglinde in Wagner's Ring of the Canadian Opera Company at the Four Seasons Center for the Performing Arts and made her debut in this role at the Bayreuth Festival in 2006 . In 2010 she sang her first Senta in Paris - a role with which she celebrated a great success at the Bayreuth Festival in 2012.

Her album Adrianne Pieczonka Singt Wagner und Strauss was nominated for the 2007 Canadian Juno Award for Classical Album of the Year in the category Vocal or Choral Performance .

In March 2007, Adrianne Pieczonka received the title of Chamber Singer in Vienna . Also in 2007 she was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Canada . In 2009 she was made a member of the Royal Society of Canada .

Adrianne Pieczonka lives in Toronto with her wife, mezzo-soprano Laura Tucker , and a daughter.
