Cornelis van Aerssen (politician, 1600)
Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijk (* 1600 in ?? Paris ; † 19th November 1662 in The Hague ) was a Dutch nobleman, military as well as an ultra oranisch minded statesman of the Golden Age of the Netherlands .
He came from the Van Aerssen family . His parents were Mr. François van Aerssen and Petronella Borre. From his father, Cornelis inherited the dominions Sommelsdijk , Spijk and Ooltgensplaat as well as his place in the Dutch knighthood .
Van Aerssen's daughter Françoise van Aerssen married the Dutch Field Marshal Hendrik des HR Rijksgraaf van Nassau-Ouderkerk . His son, Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijk, was the governor of Suriname and one of three partners in the Suriname Society .
Cornelis van Aerssen was an intimate friend and one of the political supporters of the governor Wilhelm II of Orange-Nassau . He was a colonel in the cavalry and governor of Nijmegen . In 1650 he promoted Orange's failed attack on Amsterdam . Van Aerssen was not persecuted after the political end of the Orange, but he was excluded from the knighthood of Holland by the Dutch States General .
During his life, van Aerssen was considered the richest man in Holland; in 1654 he was estimated to be worth 960,000 guilders .
