Baron François van Aerssen (born September 27, 1572 in Brussels ; † December 27, 1641 in The Hague ) - landlord of Sommelsdijk , Ooltgensplaat and Spijk - from the important Van Aerssen family, was one of the dominant ones in the first half of the 17th century Statesmen and diplomats of the Netherlands.

Life

The son of the Brussels pensioner Cornelis van Aerssen was sent by Johan van Oldenbarnevelt as Dutch envoy to the French court in Paris at the young age of 26 . He organized a 12-year armistice with Spain for the Republic of the United Netherlands . As envoy of the Netherlands, he was recalled in 1613 by pensioner Oldenbarnevelt because he was in close contact with the Huguenots . Because of his reprimand by the council pensioner, Van Aerssen tried by all means to overthrow the powerful statesman. Together with governor Moritz von Oranien-Nassau , he involved him in a religious process that caused Oldenbarnevelt to fall and die. Subsequent purges occurred in Holland , which fell victim to many of the Remonstrant and Oldenbarnevelt well-disposed city governments. This also happened in Amsterdam when Jakob de Graeff Dircksz was replaced by Albert Burgh at the endeavors of Van Aerssen and Reinier Pauw . In 1619 Moritz von Oranien named him a member of the Dutch knighthood , in which capacity he strengthened the Orange party, and thus was able to achieve a majority for the condemnation of Oldenbarnevelt in the knighthood .

After the death of Moritz von Orange, Van Aerssen became the trusted councilor of Friedrich Heinrich von Orange . During this time, François van Aerssen was the Dutch envoy in the Republic of Venice , London and again in Paris. France's omnipotent Prime Minister Richelieu called him one of the three greatest politicians of his time.

Van Aerssen received various nobility elevations, for example that of a French baron in 1636 . In 1627 he had a fortune of 800,000 guilders , making him one of the richest people of the Dutch Golden Age .

His son Cornelis van Aerssen was an intimate fan of the Orange throughout his life.
