development

The R89C replaced the previous prototype series built by March Engineering , which Nissan had initially used. It was developed by Lola and had an out of aramid - and carbon fiber reinforced plastic existing monocoque chassis (at Lola under the internal name "T89 / 10"). All wheels were individually on double wishbones with adjustable KONI - shock absorbers and coil springs suspended.

Nissan's new 3.5-liter V8 type VRH35Z engine with four overhead camshafts and two turbochargers was installed in a load-bearing manner for greater chassis rigidity and, according to the race set-up, developed approx. 800 hp (588 kW) at 7600 rpm, while it did one in qualifying Power of over 1000 PS (735 kW) could be achieved. The VRH35Z was a further development of the 3.0-l V8, type VRH30, used in previous years.

Racing history

1989

In the Sports Car World Championship (WSPC) in 1989, Nissan had to struggle to achieve not only sufficient reliability, but also progress with the new chassis and engine. As a result, the R89C was only able to score in three races, but ended the season fifth in the constructors' championship.

In the All Japan Sportscar Prototype Championship (JSPC), the R89C suffered the same fate because it could not keep up with its further developed competitors Porsche and Toyota , so that Nissan was third of the season.

In the 1989 Le Mans 24-hour race , Nissan entered three of the new racing cars, supported by a privately entered R88C from the Courage Compétition racing team . In qualifying only positions 12, 15 and 19 could be achieved, the race produced an even worse result, as none of the three vehicles used reached the finish. Two R89Cs could not finish due to an engine failure and one car was eliminated due to an accident.

1990

In 1990 Nissan sent the R89C into the first race of the WSPC until it was replaced by the R90CK / R90CP models . The R89C were sold to private drivers and this year the Courage Compétition managed to take 22nd place in the Le Mans 24-hour race with a former factory R89C .

Two R89C were further developed for the 1990 season. Car # 02 was converted to the R90CP for Nismo , while car # 03 was upgraded to the R90V by the private Le Mans team . He finished sixth before being withdrawn from the race.
