The first Avenir was presented in May 1990 and from 1991 replaced the Nissan Bluebird station wagon discontinued with the U13 series ; It was related to the Nissan Primera , which was introduced in Europe around the same time , as the station wagon version of which it was initially exported (with a slightly modified rear end). In Japan, injected four-cylinder engines of 1.8 and 2.0 liters displacement with two overhead camshafts were on offer (types SR18DE and SR20DE). The drive was usually on the front wheels, on request there were also all-wheel variants .

In January 1993 there was a cosmetic change (type PW10) and the introduction of a two-liter turbo diesel engine (type CD20T; 67 kW / 91 PS). From 1995 the all-wheel-drive model was also available as the Avenir Salut GT with a turbo version of the two-liter gasoline engine (type SR20DET; 154 kW / 210 PS).
