The A31 was designed as a sporty sedan and used the floor pan of the Skyline R32 as its basis . With this he therefore shared some technical details such as the in- line six-cylinder , rear-wheel drive , all-wheel steering and a five-speed automatic transmission. The Cefiro also came up with a wide range of engines, which also included a turbo-charged engine. Because of the powerful engine, these models are very popular in the drift scene .

With the second generation of the Cefiro, which came onto the market in August 1994, the sporty genes of its predecessor were dispensed with and the new model was designed as a luxurious and comfortable vehicle. The drive was now via the front wheels and three newly developed V6 engines were installed to replace the old in-line six-cylinder. The A32 is also the only Cefiro generation that was available as a five-door station wagon in addition to the four-door notchback sedan. This was sold from June 1997.
From this generation, the Cefiro was identical to the Nissan Maxima and the Infiniti I30 , which were only available as a sedan in Europe and North America.

The third generation of the Cefiro was the last of this model to be built and sold in Japan; the market launch was in December 1998. Only two V6 engines were available for the new model, a 2.0 liter from the previous model and a 2.5 liter with direct injection. Due to the reduced choice of extras and engines, the A33 did not achieve good sales figures, only in Malaysia it found larger sales.
A successor was placed in Japan under the model name Teana . This was also sold as Cefiro in certain markets.

The fourth generation was last only built in China and Thailand . In the latter, however, only as a CKD kit and with its own interior. The structurally identical Nissan Teana is mainly sold here as an import from Japan and the CKD models are therefore mainly sold in China. Despite the same engine, there are differences mainly in the equipment. The model built in China is only available with automatic transmission and full leather equipment; the Thai model, on the other hand, only has a fabric cover and a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The Thai model is also far inferior in terms of special equipment. The main markets of the Cefiro are mainly metropolitan areas such as Hong Kong and Shanghai . Until late 2012, the Cefiro was only used by the Pakistani Ghandhara Nissan Ltd. from the tape. In all other markets, the model name was changed to Teana between 2007 and 2009 with the introduction of the new generation under the model code J32.
