Until 1989, upper limits of 4700 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and two liters of displacement for mid-range models were common in Japan for tax reasons . Both Nissan Cedric and Gloria as well as their arch-rival Toyota Crown adhered exactly to these dimensions. When rumors got around that Toyota was developing a longer and wider model based on the Crown (later the Toyota Crown Majesta), Nissan acted and, in January 1988, six months after the new Cedric / Gloria Y31, which was based on this mid-range Cima, building on the model series, but larger and stylistically revised.

The Cima of the FY31 series was available with a 149 kW (200 PS) three-liter V6 (type VG30DE) or a turbo-charged version of this engine (VG30DET) with 190 kW (255 PS). The turbo version was particularly popular in Japan.

Two months after the introduction of Cedric / Gloria Y32, the second generation Cima followed in August 1991 (type FY32). The name was shortened to Cima, the nickname Gloria was dropped. The design dispensed with the sporty appeal of the first generation.

The FY32 was powered by a 4.1 liter V8 engine (type VH41DE), a shorter-stroke version of the V8 from the Nissan President / Infiniti Q45 (type VH45DE), with 198 kW (270 hp). Alternatively, the turbocharged three-liter V6 was still on offer.

In 1991 a hydraulic, computer-aided active chassis was introduced: Full-Active Suspension . (similar to Active Body Control )

From autumn 1992 the Cima was also available with all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering (High Capacity Actively Controlled Steering - HICAS).

In January 2001, Nissan introduced the fourth generation Cima. Since the Group's new, state-of-the-art FM platform was not yet available, the F50 was based on the revised platform of the previous model. Nissan's new design direction was clearly evident in the exterior and interior design. A striking feature of the Cima F50 are the headlights, each with seven reflectors.

Two engines were again available in the F50, one the VQ30DET turbo three-liter V6 and the other a 4.5-liter V8 with direct injection (type VK45DD). Both machines have an output of 209 kW (280 hp).
