The Nissan R87E is a sports car prototype of the group C , which was prepared 1987th The three racing cars produced were built by Nismo on a chassis manufactured by March .
The R87E was primarily intended for use in the 24 Hours of Le Mans , but was also used in the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship (JSPC).
development
The chassis developed by March exclusively for Nissan and known internally as 87G was made of aluminum and constructed in a monocoque construction. The chassis was equipped with a double wishbone suspension with coil springs and a stabilizer . A newly developed 3-liter V8 engine with four valves per cylinder and biturbo charging was installed by Nismo , which was connected to a manual five-speed gearbox and whose block and cylinder head were also made of aluminum. The engine received the code VEJ30 and served as a replacement for the V6 engine still used in the previous model R86V . The R87E was designed as a mid-engine vehicle with rear-wheel drive.
All chassis were used as the Nissan R87E in 1987. In 1988 chassis # 1 was converted to the March R88S for races in the JSPC and the R88V for the World Sports Prototype Championship (WSPC). In the same year chassis # 2 and # 3 were modified by Nismo to the R88C .
Races
1987
In the JSPC, the R87E was initially only used in one run, the 500 km race in Fuji . This was the only way for the team to prepare themselves and the vehicle for Le Mans use under racing conditions. However, this training time was further shortened by the failure of the car due to an engine failure. Despite the limited experience from just this single race, the Nissan works team competed in the 1987 Le Mans 24-hour race . Two R87E and a privately used R86V from the previous year took part, but none of the cars reached the finish. The car of the private team Italya Sports with starting number 29 had to give up after seven hours and 86 laps due to an accident, while the two new Nissans were struggling with technical problems. Finally, both R87E retired after 16 hours of racing, # 32 with 117 laps driven due to transmission and electronics problems and # 23 with 181 laps due to an engine defect. After this devastating result, the R87E was used a few more times in Japan, with a finish in 8th position being the best possible placement.
