The name Teana comes from a Native American word that means something like dawn or dawn. It was chosen because it metaphorically fits the new edition of a luxurious sedan and has an elegant sound.

The 2.3-liter is coupled with a four-speed automatic, the 3.5-liter with a continuously variable CVT automatic and the four-cylinder version, which has all-wheel drive as standard, with a five-speed automatic.

In the People's Republic of China, the Dongfeng Motor Company, in which Nissan holds shares, produced the Teana. The model was also sold in India, Russia, Ukraine, New Zealand and Australia, in Australia under the name Maxima as a competitor to Mitsubishi 380 and Toyota Aurion . The Teana-based Samsung SM5 and SM7 are available in Korea and Chile . In addition, there has been the Renault Safrane II in the Gulf States since 2008 , which is based on the Teana and shares the design with it. In some Asian countries the model was still marketed as the Nissan Cefiro . It was not until the generation change that the model name was changed to Teana in these markets.
