The Samsung SM5 is a car model from the South Korean car manufacturer Renault Samsung Motors , which was initially only officially produced for the regional market. The first generation belongs to the upper middle class segment . It was built on the platform of the Nissan Maxima and represents its sister model. In 2004 a new generation of models was launched, which is also based on the Nissan Maxima .
The current, third generation, which was produced from 2010, also uses the same platform as the Nissan Maxima with the Nissan D platform. The Renault Latitude is also offered on this platform .

The first generation of the SM5 was available in ten different model versions, all of which were only available as a notchback sedan. The first generation was sold exclusively on the domestic market in South Korea via an independent Nissan-Samsung dealer network and also from some Nissan dealers.

In the last quarter of 2004, Samsung launched the second generation of the SM5. Like its predecessor, this generation is also based on the Nissan Maxima , albeit the current version from Malay production. From this generation, the series was split into two independent models. The more simply equipped models with four-cylinder engines are still offered under the name SM5. The high-quality equipped models with V6 engines will be marketed as the Samsung SM7 from this point on . Since Renault is now making more intensive efforts to acquire the Samsung brand, some of the model versions have also been available on the markets of South American countries under a separate dealer network since the second half of 2004.

In 2010 the third generation of the SM5 came on the market. Unlike its predecessor, a six-cylinder engine is also available, although the engines of the Samsung SM7 are still more powerful. For the 2013 model year, the SM5 received a facelift, which includes a revision of the body design and minor optimizations of the engines and interior design. A slightly modified version of this generation is offered in Europe and Australia and parts of Asia as the Renault Latitude .
