The Gloria is an upper middle class car manufactured by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Prince from 1959 to 2004 and later - after the Prince was taken over by Nissan in 1967 - by Nissan . The model was taken over by Nissan, although the factory already had its own car with a similar design in its program with the Cedric . In contrast to the group's smaller models, it was never offered under the brand name Datsun, but always as Nissan.

Originally built on the Prince Skyline , the Gloria was a sister model of the Nissan Cedric from 1971 until both model series were replaced by the Fuga in 2004 .

From 1964 a Grand Gloria (S44 series) with a 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine was added. It was fitted with a DeDion rear axle .

In April 1967, the Gloria Type A30, still developed by Prince, appeared as Nissan. The elaborate DeDion rear axle gave way to a simple rigid axle, the angular body was drawn much more modern. The drive was initially taken over by the Prince two-liter six-cylinder, which was replaced in 1969 by a Nissan six-cylinder of the same displacement. A four-door sedan (in the versions Gloria, Gloria Super 6 and Gloria Super Deluxe) and a five-door station wagon (Gloria Van and Van Deluxe) were also offered.

From 1971 Gloria and Cedric were put on a common technical basis, differences were limited to cosmetics. The range now included a four-door sedan, five-door station wagon and a two-door hardtop coupé, powered by six-cylinder engines with a displacement of 2 or 2.6 liters. While the Cedric was also exported to Europe as the Datsun 200/240/260/280 C, the Gloria was reserved for the home market.

Another new feature was a four-door hardtop sedan that was added to the familiar body versions.

In 1979 a new Gloria appeared, which was offered as a deliberately angular limousine with B-pillars , as a hardtop without B-pillar and more inclined C-pillar, and as a station wagon. There was a choice of two-liter six-cylinder with carburetor, injection or turbocharger, the 2.8-liter six-cylinder, two different diesel engines (2.2 or 2.8 liters) and the two-liter liquefied gas for the taxi industry. It was shifted via a four-speed gearbox with steering wheel gearshift, a five-speed gearbox with center shift or a three-speed automatic. The two-liter turbo was the first Japanese production engine with an exhaust gas turbocharger. The use of electronics for the engine control (ECCS system) was also new.

The next model change took place in June 1983. Nothing changed in the body variants, the new base engine was a two-liter four-cylinder, above it was a likewise new V6 two-liter and a three-liter V6, and there was again the revised 2.8-liter diesel. While the sedans received a successor as early as 1987, the station wagon models of this generation, only slightly modified, remained in the range until 1999.
