The first generation of the Cube (referred to as the Z10 ) was introduced in 1998. Like the Micra / March, it was built on the Nissan B platform and was also equipped with the Micra engine, a 1.3 liter R4 engine. A CVT transmission and all-wheel drive were available on request. The Cube filled the gap between the March and the Sunny in the Nissan model range .

A second generation of the Cube (called the Z11 ) was introduced in 2002 and had a much larger interior space than its predecessor. The car, which showed a modern combination of sharp and rounded edges, was based on the 3rd generation of the March and was powered by a 1.4 liter R4 engine. On request there was again a CVT transmission. In addition, an extended version of the Cube with seven seats - called Cube 3 - was offered. In 2005, both models were upgraded by installing a 1.5 l R4 engine from the HR series from the Tiida . The new e4WD all-wheel drive system only transferred the drive force to the rear wheels when the front wheels were spinning.

Version with electric drive

In 2008 Nissan developed the Nissan Denki Cube Concept (German: Nissan electric concept vehicle). It was presented at the New York International Auto Show in March 2008 and its electric motor is powered by a lithium-ion battery . Nissan's compact lithium-ion technology, one of the company's particular strengths, provides batteries with twice the electrical energy of conventional cylindrical batteries of the same type.

The third generation of the Cube (referred to as the Z12 ) was first shown at the LA Auto Show on November 19, 2008. This generation was also offered outside of Japan for the first time.

The revised Nissan Cube shows a more rounded styling than its predecessor. This development is most likely to be seen in the rear area, on an asymmetrical rear window that runs around the C-pillar on the passenger side, and on the oval side windows on the driver and passenger side.

The number of seats remains at five. According to the Nissan designers, the interior of the vehicle is inspired by the curves of a jacuzzi , so it offers a comfortable social atmosphere. As a styling detail z. B. a wave motif on the headliner, which is also repeated on smaller parts, such as the speaker covers or the cup holders. Nissan offers a large number of accessories for the Cube to encourage customers to personalize. This includes colored applications for ventilation openings, switches for the power windows and jacket hooks, as well as elastic straps in different colors, lighting for footwells and cup holders and a piece of fringed carpet for the flat hollow on top of the dashboard.

The third generation Cube is again based on the Nissan B platform with front-wheel drive and is powered by a 1.8 l R4 engine with 90 kW output; both constructions are also used in the Tiida Versa . The cars will be equipped with a manual six-speed gearbox or a CVT gearbox. The fuel consumption will probably be less than 7.7 liters per 100 km.

Nissan held a brochure about the car using augmented reality technology for visitors to the 2008 LA Auto Show . If you hold this brochure up to a webcam , various 3D models of the vehicle appear there in real-time interaction with the brochure.

In 2010 a 1.6 MT KAADO four-cylinder petrol engine with a 1598 cm³ displacement and 81 kW (110 PS) was added. Consumption should be 6.6 liters per 100 kilometers, i.e. 151 g / km CO₂.

At the beginning of 2011, the Cube was deleted from the European Nissan model range, as the sales figures remained well below expectations until recently. In Japan, however, the vehicle is built to the present day.
